Jess Barclay Lawton is a Naarm (Melbourne)-based writer-director known for her raw and intimate work, which blends documentary and narrative practices in a distinctive hybrid style.

Lawton established herself as an emerging talent with her short film Morning Star, which premiered at the 63rd Locarno Film Festival and screened at over 30 festivals worldwide. Her subsequent films, We Keep On Dancing and Building Bridges, achieved critical acclaim, with awards such as ‘Best Live Action (Under 15)’ at Palm Springs International ShortFest and nominations for prestigious prizes, including the 'Grand Jury Prize' at Slamdance Film Festival and the 'Grand Prix International Prize' at Cork Film Festival.

In 2016, Lawton's Screen Australia-funded web series Movement was selected as one of six web series globally to screen at TriBeca Film Festival’s TriBeca N.O.W. program.

Her short documentary The Sweetness was one of only nine films competing for the Documentary Australia Award at the 2022 Sydney Film Festival. The following year, she returned to participate in the For Film’s Sake (FFS) incubator program, Platform: Lab.

Lawton’s documentary ZEF premiered on NOWNESS and has accumulated over 5 million views. She is a MIFF Accelerator Lab alumna, a 2021 TIFF Filmmaker Lab participant, and a TIFF Share Her Journey Fellowship honouree. Over the past two years, she has been developing her hybrid feature film Melaleuca.
